Dr Ajay M Verma

Ajay is a Consultant Gastroenterologist working in Kettering, Northamptonshire, appointed in 2015. He has specialist interests in IBD, early colorectal cancer, endoscopy (including ERCP), and clinical research - he is the research Director for University Hospitals of Northamptonshire (Kettering & Northampton General Hospital). He is an Honorary Associate Professor for the Leicester Cancer Research Centre (at the University of Leicester) and Chief Investigator for the CRUK funded COLO-PREVENT study.

Since 2019, Ajay was appointed as Gastroenterology specialty lead for NIHR RDN East Midlands. He served as an elected councillor at the Royal College of Physicians (RCP) until August 2025, having previously served as chair of the New Consultants Committee, member of the Medical Specialties Board, and Joint Specialty Committee for Gastroenterology and Hepatology.

Ajay has been the chair of the British Society of Gastroenterology's colorectal section committee till 2025, and is a current a member of the inflammatory bowel disease section committee and endoscopy clinical research group. He is also a member of the Midlands Gastroenterological Society executive committee, and the MidOx IBD collaborative committee. He was a lead author for the British Society of Gastroenterology inflammatory bowel disease guidelines (2025) and the iron deficiency anaemia guidelines (2021).

 

Away from work Ajay enjoys spending time with family, his wife Vini is an Interventional GI Radiologist, his son Luca is 10, his daughter Bella is 8. He is a sports fanatic - Football, Cricket, Tennis, American Football. He plays badminton to a reasonable standard (his assessment!).
